I recently wrapped up a nursery project for a sweet family who is welcoming their fifth (5!) baby this month! Before their newest addition arrived, they needed a dedicated nursery that wouldn’t crowd their four kids who have their rooms on the second story of the home. My client had the idea to turn their formal living room off of the front entry into a new nursery for the baby. This idea worked well, as this room is close to the master & wasn’t getting regular use by their young family. Here is where we started:
This home was built within the last ten years and already had white trim throughout, with warm, moody colors in the main living areas. Because this is a nursery, we wanted to bring some light into the room but didn’t want it feeling out of place with the rest of the house, considering it’s one of the first rooms you see as you walk through the door. Being a white paint girl through & through, this was a good challenge for me!
We kept the wall color on the three walls that matched the foyer, and on the accent wall we decided to do a custom millwork pattern that we designed & thick crown moulding around the room to tie it all together. It is so striking when you come in the front door and look into the room-it is seriously gorgeous! We went with this treatment to keep in line with the traditional bones of the home, and I think it fits perfectly.
My client already had her crib and furniture ordered when I started on this project which worked out well. The dark stain on the furniture really ties into the rest of the home & makes it feel cohesive, yet set apart.
All of the inspiration images my client sent to me were very neutral with heavy texture, so that’s what we went for wherever we could. We went with a high-pile, shag oh-so-soft rug on the floor that really brightens up the room, this beautiful side table & a cable knit ottoman for the rocker.
Another request my client had was for a rope lamp, and I was thrilled when I found this one from Crate&Kids; it’s substantial and full of chunky texture. I love the interest it adds to the room.
To me, the showstopper in the room is the mirror. We wanted to create a focal point for the room and I think this mirror is just amazing. I am seriously trying to find a way to get it into my own house!
When you first walk through the front door, you get a glimpse of the wall that fits the changing table dresser. This is a big wall with lots of blank space, so we went with a grid gallery wall that will hold small (4×4″) photos so that there is a cohesive focal point without feeling busy.
For textiles in this space we kept it simple, with custom bedding, subtle blue on the rocker for baby boy, and color blocked linen black-out drapery panels. The drapery adds so much height & drama to the room- I love it. They will also transition well once this room is no longer a nursery, which is great when investing in custom drapery.
From start to finish, this project was so fun & enjoyable to work on-and that is entirely to do with the wonderful family who lives here. It’s my hope that this room can serve this new mama well during all those hours of nursing, late night diaper changes & rocking baby boy to sleep.
