I’m excited to share this living room project with you! This was a local project that was in need of new furnishings and storage solutions for a large wall with a poorly scaled fireplace. The room itself had great bones with a generous size, natural light and an open flow. My main focus was to bring an architectural element to the largest wall in the room to create more permanency, ground the space and better incorporate the fireplace and tv with custom cabinetry.
the before + design concept
This room is right off the entryway, so you immediately see it as you enter the home. This is also a main walkway to the kitchen and primary bedroom, so the cabinetry around the fireplace needed to be well-suited to the room without imposing on it. We had a large return air vent to work around, so I designed the cabinets to be about 36″ wide on either side of the fireplace. And because the fireplace is small, this felt more balanced than going with cabinetry that covered the entire wall.
We painted the walls Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams and had the cabinetry painted Natural Cream by Sherwin-Williams for a soft contrast. I really love this color for walls and trim or cabinetry. The furnishings were fairly straightforward with a neutral palette and emphasis on warm tones. My client prefers a space to feel un-fussy with little clutter, so that was top of mind through the furnishing and styling phase.
after
The cabinetry truly transformed the space, grounding the fireplace and tv while making the entire room feel larger and more inviting.
I love the paneling at the back of the shelving and tv, flush-inset doors on the cabinet base and my favorite Rejuvenation oval knobs that accent the warmth in the paint color. The whole room now feels timeless and relevant, and I know it will be beautiful for years to come.
