art class

I am helping my mom with a craft show this weekend and we have been busy glazing lots of vases for Mother’s Day bouquets. While working on these I was reminded of something very important: whenever I slow down enough to do something purely creative or artistic I feel rejuvenated and inspired to keep going – it’s when I get too bogged down in the details, overly focused on outcomes or don’t schedule margin into my week that I become burnt out and tired when my creative idea generating suffers. I once read that “creativity needs space” and that couldn’t be truer. When I carve out a couple of hours to read, clean, organize, go for a long walk or cook a new-to-me recipe I am usually better primed to do creative work than if I am just scheduling it into my day like another appointment. I have had ceramics ideas brewing in my brain for a very long time now that I have been wanting to try my hand at but have not made the time. I promised myself that after this busy weekend that I will take one day a week where I only focus on creating – without the expectation of “productive” results. Working on these vases and trying out new glaze combinations was just the reminder I needed of the importance of slowing down & allowing space for creativity.

It’s patio season here and I couldn’t be more excited about it. I rearranged the back patio, we had a fresh load of pea gravel delivered, potted baby plants and added a little outdoor ambient lighting. Sipping a glass of wine on a warm summer evening is probably one of my top 5 favorite things – and these little solar lights are going to make those nights that much better!
black & white summer

I’ve already declared this summer as the season for crisp cotton. The other obvious theme in my closet right now is black and white. It feels so easy yet refined for warmer months ahead. I am finding myself reaching for my leather flats over sandals, so I am adding these black Jeffrey Campbell Chanel-inspired Mary Jane’s into the rotation:
