Friday Focus: Slow Design

SLOW DESIGN

The longer I immerse myself in the world of Interior Design, the more obsessed I am about catching every detail. I love studying Pinned and Saved images to understand what makes them a scroll-stopper. There’s so much time and intentionality that goes into well-designed spaces — that’s definitely the way I want to approach my work and own home.

We have been mulling over what projects to take on in our house this year, and I’m feeling less of a push to get it done than I have in previous years. My thinking has shifted from wanting a space to mimic my saved images to actually understanding the creative process behind good design, and in turn creating a space that has depth and soul. And that takes time. I don’t think Ty or myself guessed we would still be living in the home we’re in, but would’ve moved onto the next project by now. With three kids in a house this size it can often feel like the walls are closing in. But I feel more and more committed to taking our time finding a home that will serve our family well and lend to a thoughtful design process. I have specific pieces of furniture to fit into our next home, art that I want to be front and center and a vision for how I want the home to feel when living in it.

I’m not sure when our next “big” project will be, and that’s kind of exciting. In the meantime, let’s remember our most recent bathroom renovation from the 2021 One Room Challenge:

LATELY

I’ve been workin in my mom’s studio the past few weeks on a little collaboration between the two of us that will go live towards the end of the month! She’s owned a pottery studio for the past 6 years or so and it’s been a lot of fun to add my own twist to things. She recently did a restock of her best-sellers – including my favorite mugs:

This back wall in our family room has always been tricky to fill, primarily because 1) it’s very big, 2) this wall is the main focal point when standing in our entry or the front room and 3) there’s not a place for artwork to be anchored by a piece of furniture beneath it. I’ve imagined a grid gallery here for awhile but wasn’t sure I could stand the glare from the glass; I ended up ordering these frames and clearance and am so glad we went for it. I love having some of our favorite memories framed in these oversized mats grouped together as one large “piece” that’s a pretty neutral focal point for the room.

RECENT FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE FINDS

Marketplace has really been paying off for me lately! I’ve found a number of original oil paintings along with the 10 year old ficus Alii tree that I snagged just yesterday. I initially was hunting for a faux tree but came across this beauty and couldn’t pass it up. Everything I’ve read said that this is a low-maintenance plant, so I have my fingers crossed that it’s happy in this corner of our front living room.

WINDOW SHOPPING

I have a growing number of items in my Save for Later list on Amazon lately. I particularly really want to buy a few of these portable LED lamps for outdoor entertaining this summer, along with the acrylic bookstand for our front room:

Have a great weekend!

He was in need of a nice, flat weave rug (because Legos) and I was really excited to get this Henley rug by @loloirugs x @joannagaines @magnolia from their latest collab. I have these rugs all over my house because I seriously love them and they wear so well! More to come on this little room of his.

Uncover the back patio with me! After days of rain Uncover the back patio with me! After days of rain it’s time to let the furniture breathe a bit and open everything up to the sun. With part of our patio being pea gravel, the easiest way to get loose stones back where they belong is with our leaf blower - we recently topped it off with more gravel so it’s looking extra plush lately. You will find me here tonight pretending that it’s already the weekend 🥂

I rearranged the back patio a bit and I’m loving how it feels. Just a little reminder that it doesn’t take big bucks or an overhaul for something to feel fresh again!
