GET THE LOOK : LAYERED ARTWORK

The right artwork can set the mood in any room and tell a story about those who live within those walls – but art usually is an investment, and more often than not I see clients forgo art altogether because of the commitment it usually demands. Starting with small vignettes is a great way to practice selecting artwork; adding a few layered pieces of art to an entry table, bookshelf or dresser can create a really beautiful moment without breaking the bank.

When layering art together I like to stick to 3 combinations: abstract + sketch artwork, abstract + landscape photography or abstract/sketch/landscape + personal photos. Abstract artwork allows your eye to rest, while sketch art + landscape photography + personal photos invite your eye to take in the details.

Target has been upping their art game lately and I’ve been loving the affordable selection they’ve curated. Shop my favorite abstract, sketch and landscape artwork below that make beautiful combinations for any art rookie!

RECENTLY

We’ve all been reflecting on the year that was 2020, remembering the not so great moments as well as the memories that redeemed the harder times. I wrote a post documenting my thoughts through the year – what I learned, would do differently and how the year didn’t end as expected.

READ THE POST

When Ty and I honeymooned in La Jolla, CA we visited a restaurant called The Cottage that became a fast favorite of ours – so much so that we ate there multiple times that trip. A few years later a co-worker of mine found a recipe in the paper that she thought I might like: The Cottage Strawberry Stuffed French Toast. That little piece of newspaper has become one of our most prized possessions! It’s our Christmas morning tradition to enjoy this rich French toast along side our coffee. It’s the perfect celebratory brunch dish. Trust us, you’ll love it.

The Cottage Stuffed French Toast

Brioche or Italian loaf
1 1/4 C sliced strawberries
1/2 C sugar
1 tsp brandy
1/4 C grated orange peel
4 eggs
2 C heavy cream
1 Tb brandy
1 Tb brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Mascarpone cheese

Mix together strawberries, sugar, 1 tsp brandy and orange peel. Let compote sit for 30 minutes to allow strawberries to soften. Lightly beat eggs in a medium bowl. Add cream, 1 Tb brandy, brown sugar and vanilla and beat well. Soak 12 pieces thickly sliced brioche or Italian loaf in off mixture. Melt 2 Tb butter on a griddle over medium heat and cook each piece of bread for 4 minutes per side. As toast comes off griddle, immediately spread 1 tsp mascarpone cheese and 1 Tb compote in middle and fold in half so cheese melts and strawberries warm. Drizzle with maple syrup and enjoy!

We did a lighting switcharoo in the dining and living room, and I’m loving the change! I think this modern light sets off the traditional feel of the rest of the room & feels much more balanced to me now.

I love working out and try my best to always schedule it into my day and after having a baby I’m always extra motivated to get back into shape! Since I’m basically living in activewear lately – and I like a good incentive – here are my favorite $20 leggings and cute tops that I’ve got my eye on.

Happy New Year, friends!

Uncover the back patio with me! After days of rain Uncover the back patio with me! After days of rain it’s time to let the furniture breathe a bit and open everything up to the sun. With part of our patio being pea gravel, the easiest way to get loose stones back where they belong is with our leaf blower - we recently topped it off with more gravel so it’s looking extra plush lately. You will find me here tonight pretending that it’s already the weekend 🥂
