I am not one to break out the hand towels with holiday inspired sayings when Thanksgiving or Christmas rolls around, but I do love adding subtle touches to my existing decor to welcome each new season. Fall has become one of my favorite seasons & I am always so excited to warm up our home with cozy smells & colors that I don’t typically keep in our home year-round. I like having a base-layer of furniture and decor pieces that that can transition easily through the seasons with a few tweaks. Investing in vintage pots or neutral textiles allows you to add the necessary layers to them through the year to keep things feeling fresh & season-appropriate without going on a big shopping spree with each new holiday. There are a few elements that I focus on bringing into my decor when the weather starts to cool: texture, jewel-toned hues, plaid patterns & layered neutrals.
TEXTURE
I’m typically all about texture but as the weather cools I’m drawn to even more natural elements, chunky woven textiles & worn wood tones. Think: wool, bucle, jute, leather, warm walnut, aged oak, terra cotta & stone elements. Texture instantly warms up a space & gives that cozy, lived-in feel that we all crave when we retreat to our warm homes during cold winter months. Add a few hand-carved wooden bowls to your shelves or coffee table, a bucle throw blanket or a mix of linen & wool pillows to your sofa.
JEWEL-TONED HUES
When it comes to adding color to our home for the holidays I like to think outside of the typical orange, red & green. Using jewel-tones to spruce up a space feels fresh & unexpected while still leaning into the warmth of the season. I always gravitate toward plum, caramel & olive green hues when choosing new pieces for our home once fall approaches; my favorite ways to add these in are through faux greenery, textiles & handmade pottery pieces — that makes them easy to move in and out of our decor with the change in seasons.
PLAIDS & LAYERED NEUTRALS
Plaids don’t have to be reserved to the holidays, but I gravitate toward them more during the fall & winter — I think I like the nostalgic feel they lend to decor. Plaids also mix well together and create an interesting, collected feel when added to a sofa or armchair. I like to keep my textile and decor layering fairly neutral with hits of rich color; this keeps the extra decor added to our homes during the season from feeling too heavy or cluttered. Try adding faux greenery to your styled spaces, a throw blanket & set of pillows to the corner of a sofa that’s usually empty or layer your front doormat with a plaid cotton rug underneath.
