Choosing A New Light for Our TV Den

As I look through photos of our house, it’s gone through many different stages and seasons. It’s adapted to our growing family and has been a physical embodiment of my creativity and personal growth. And while this house is still meeting the needs of our family (for a little while longer), our home will continue to evolve and change as my creative mind just will. not. stop. I’ve gone through seasons where I feel guilty about that (no thanks to comments like “I see that you’re changing something in your house…again”) and I don’t actually carry out my full creative vision. Which then leads to quiet discontentment and never hitting pause on the constant ideas in my mind. However, since my word for this year is focus, I must decide to put my blinders on and do as I know is best. I’m still not quite hitting my creative stride – but making these small changes in the tv den is really helping me get my mind on the right track.

I’ve long loved this saturated, sometimes-green-sometimes-gray paint color that we had painted the entire room 3 years ago. This was actually the first paint color I used on our kitchen cabinets! But this room had felt flat and uninspiring to me. I think I was just craving something different. We have all seen a room drenched in one color, and we know that creates a beautiful and striking space. But I’m ready to do something that we don’t see often, that I’ve never tried myself. So I had envisioned a room that turns color and expectations on its head while remaining warm and inviting. I knew I wanted to keep the trim color the same, and wanted lighter walls – but not white. I landed on Fossil by Benjamin Moore, which looks very close to the color of linen. I wanted the light fixture to contrast against the walls, but just ever so slightly. Time and time again I’m drawn to tonal palettes and spaces so I loved the idea of a large white shade set against the backdrop of earthy, warm paint tones.

I almost bought this pendant light from Visual Comfort a few years ago, but instead went another direction and always regretted not going with my initial gut feeling. Once again… go with what you want the first time, even if it means waiting!

A picture just barely captures the contrast of the pendant and wall color – but in person it feels thoughtful and elevated. The scale is just enough to make a statement without overpowering the room; it’s an updated classic that is the perfect layer to the room.

Right now the room may look a little vanilla, but just you wait(!). I have been pouring over artwork and in here we’re going for something that is loud and statement making. I haven’t been this excited about a space in a long time, and it feels really good. Sources linked below!
